——————-
Rodolfo- (writes, stops, thinks, writes again) (restless; tears up the page, throws down the pen) “The mood has left me.” (discouraged) (a soft knock on the door) “Who’s there?”
Mimi- (offstage) “Pardon.”
Rodolfo- (getting up) “It’s a woman.”
Mimi- “Please may I. My candle has gone out.”
Rodolfo- (runs to open) “Really.”
Mimi- (with a key, and a darkened candle, stands in the doorway) “I’d like to…
Rodolfo- “Won’t you come in and sit down?”
Mimi- “No, don’t bother.”
Rodolfo- (insisting) “Won’t you please come in?” (she comes in and begins coughing: Rodolfo worried) “Do you feel ill here?”
Mimi- “No. Nothing.” (coughing)
Rodolfo- “You’re looking pale now.”
Mimi- “It’s my breath. Oh those stairs.” (faints. Rodolfo barely holds her and makes her sit down. her key and candle fall)
Rodolfo- (embarrassed) “And now what shall I do?” (gets some water and sprinkles it into her face) “Like this…” (watching her closely) “Her face looks so like illness.” (Mimi comes to) “Do you feel better?”
Mimi- “Yes.”
Rodolfo- “The room’s very cold here. Come sit beside the fire. One moment…”
